How to: Inspiration Board

How to create a vision board by Janetta LeRose.

It's always exciting to start a brand new year and plan ahead for the future. Every year, I sit down and create a list of resolutions and goals I want to accomplish in 365 days or less. I always start strong for about 2 months, and then come to a screeching halt by March. Last year, I felt that I needed more than a little list to keep myself motivated. I gathered my goals and inspirations and pinned them on a corkboard as a daily visual reminder.

An inspiration, or vision, board is a great way to help you stay motivated throughout the year. It is a visual reminder of your goals and aspirations. Your board can be completely text-based, image-based, or a combo of the two.

What you'll need:

  • A corkboard
  • Craft paper or scrapbook paper
  • Magazines and/or  photos
  • Sharpie or any writing utensil
  • Scrapbook paper and patterns (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Thumb tacks, tape or push pins

I purchased my corkboard from Target, but they are available at Wal-Mart, Staples or any craft, or office supply store. Adding a fabric is a neat way to cover the brown cork. You can also paint the cork and frame in paint. Find some Pinspirations herehere, and here.

To get started, write down everything that you want to accomplish this year on a scrap piece of paper. Think about what you want to do differently this year than the previous years? What habits do you want to break? I categorized my goals in groups: finance, family, career, reputation, relationships, travel, career, creativity, and health.

Next, grab your magazines and cut out anything that speaks to you. Colors, patterns, quotes, words, etc... Don't limit yourself. If you can't find anything that stands out, use Pinterest or Google images and print it out. I like to add to my board throughout the year, so if you can't find any images when you start, it is okay.

Once you have everything you need, grab a drink, turn on your favorite Spotify playlist and go for it! Your inspiration board shouldn't look like mine or anyone else's. At the end of the year, look at everything you've accomplished.
