How To: Blanket Scarf

DIY Zara blanket scarf by Janetta LeRose

I have an affinity for scarves and blankets. Nothing beats being comfortably warm in the frigid winter. When Zara popularized the blanket scarf, I was ecstatic. Blanket scarves are so warm and and can be worn in many ways. The only downside to the scarf available at Zara is the steep price tag. Priced at $40, I was a bit hesitant to make that purchase, so of course I DIY'd. Scarves, in general, are easy to make and the blanket scarf is no different. Total DIY time for me was about 25 minutes but would take less if I wasn't such a perfectionist.

What you’ll need:
  •  1.5-3 yards of brush cotton fabric (Purchased from JoAnn's.)
  •  Scissors
  •  Sewing needle, push pin,

To get started, lay out your fabric and trim into an even square or rectangle. With your pushpin or needle, pull apart each row of thread until the frayed end is to your liking. I pulled until the ends were about 1 cm long.

Next time, I will cut 3 yards of fabric. A scarf of 1.5 yards of fabric is fine if you don’t want to deal with the heaviness or too much warmth, but I think the larger fabric will give you more style options.

See? This is simple to make and I only spent less than $10 on one scarf. Show me your DIY blanket scarf looks! Tweet me or tag me on Instagram @JanettaLeRose. Stay warm my friends.
